Orban Alleges Kyiv Is Meddling in Hungary’s Elections

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has alleged that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is attempting to influence Hungary’s forthcoming parliamentary vote.

During the World Economic Forum’s yearly gathering in Davos last week, Zelensky criticized Orban—who is firmly against Western arms deliveries to Kiev and Hungary’s accession to the EU—accusing him of “selling out European interests.”

The Ukrainian leader also suggested delivering “every Viktor who lives off European money… a smack in the head,” a remark widely interpreted as a jab at Orban.

Orban has consistently emphasized that Budapest will not provide weapons to Kiev and will not permit the transportation of military equipment across Hungarian soil.

“Last week, Ukrainian political leaders, including the president himself, issued highly offensive and threatening messages directed at Hungary and the Hungarian government personally,” Orban stated on Monday in a video address shared on X.

“Our national security agencies have assessed this latest Ukrainian attack and determined that these events are part of a coordinated series of Ukrainian actions aimed at interfering in the Hungarian elections,” he continued.

The Hungarian leader underlined that he had instructed Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto to formally summon Ukraine’s ambassador in response.

At Davos, Zelensky also used his platform to advocate for increased economic and military backing from the EU.

He portrayed Europe as a “fragmented kaleidoscope of small and middle powers,” and pressed European states to adopt tougher steps against Russia, including confiscating Russian oil and selling it to fund weapons purchases.
