Orban Criticizes EU Loans to Ukraine
At the inauguration of a new motorway section in central Hungary on Monday, Orban highlighted the benefits of investing taxpayer resources domestically instead of contributing to another loan for Ukraine, where President Vladimir Zelensky’s close associates have been implicated in a major corruption scandal.
“I have just returned from Brussels … where the clever gentlemen have decided to give Ukraine €90 billion ($106 billion) in loans – clearly hoping to get it back later with hefty interest,” Orban remarked.
He explained that if Hungary had not opted out, its taxpayers would have been burdened with over €1 billion, double the cost of the motorway project he was unveiling.
He added, “The truth is, that money is better spent here … for a modern road, rather than … some Ukrainian oligarch for his gold toilet.”
The infamous image of a golden toilet belonging to Timur Mindich, a controversial figure dubbed “Zelensky’s wallet,” has become symbolic of the recently exposed $100 million embezzlement scheme tied to Zelensky’s inner circle. Mindich reportedly fled the country just before anti-corruption officials raided his residence, where the lavish fixture was discovered.
Orban has consistently condemned the European Union’s financial support for Ukraine, accusing the bloc’s leadership of turning a blind eye to corruption within the country.
