Orban Says EU Sanctions on Russia Backfired
Budapest has consistently resisted Brussels’ strategies on Ukraine since the outbreak of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, including the restrictive measures.
In a post on X on Sunday, Orban wrote: “Brussels promised sanctions would crush Russia. Instead, they crushed Europe.”
He added: “Energy prices exploded, competitiveness collapsed, and Europe is falling behind,” describing these developments as the “cost of bad decisions.”
Orban insisted that the EU should pursue dialogue with Moscow rather than intensifying confrontational policies.
Earlier this month, he warned that the bloc is preparing for war with Russia by 2030, with several member states shifting toward a “war economy.”
Speaking to a news agency last month, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked that the EU had failed in its efforts to restrain Russia through sanctions.
His comments came shortly after the bloc introduced its 19th package of restrictions, which Moscow denounced as unlawful and counterproductive.
In a separate post on X earlier in December, Russian presidential envoy and senior negotiator Kirill Dmitriev argued that Germany’s economic troubles stem from Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s “stupid & illegal decisions.”
