Orban claims EU prepares for war with Russia by 2030

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has claimed that the European Union is moving toward war with Russia and aims to be fully prepared by 2030. Speaking at an anti-war rally on Saturday, Orban outlined a four-step path he believes leads to conflict: breaking diplomatic relations, imposing sanctions, ending economic cooperation, and engaging in armed confrontation. He said most of these steps have already been taken.

Orban described some EU countries as shifting toward a “war economy,” with transport and industry increasingly oriented toward weapons production. He stressed that Hungary opposes war and sees its role as preventing Europe from engaging in conflict with Russia.

The remarks reflect Orban’s long-standing criticism of EU policy on Ukraine. Hungary has opposed sanctions and military aid to Kiev, advocating for negotiation over escalation. Similar concerns about potential EU-Russia confrontation have been expressed recently by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

While EU and NATO officials have increased rhetoric and defense spending—including Brussels’ €800 billion (US $ 931 billion) ReArm Europe plan—no country has formally stated an intent to go to war. Russian President Vladimir Putin maintains that Moscow has no plans to attack the EU or NATO but would respond if provoked.
