Orban Praises Babis' Win as Positive Sign for Europe
He became the first international leader to publicly recognize Babis’ win soon after preliminary election results were released on Saturday evening.
Babis, an agricultural magnate often referred to as the ‘Czech Trump’ by local media, leads the right-leaning ANO movement.
The party secured approximately 35% of the vote in the parliamentary elections, placing it at the forefront of the political race.
Sharing a photo with Babis, Orban took to X to write: “Truth has prevailed! Andrej Babis has won the Czech parliamentary elections with a convincing lead. A big step for the Czech Republic, good news for Europe. Congratulations, Andrej!”
Orban's comments mirrored Babis’ own post-election address, in which the Czech leader-elect once again dismissed persistent allegations of being anti-European Union.
Instead, he asserted that his objective is to “save” the EU.
Although Babis has expressed a desire to form a single-party administration, his ANO movement did not secure an outright majority, making coalition discussions necessary.
Among the possible allies for a future government are two smaller political groups: the SPD, a far-right party that opposes both the EU and NATO, and the Motorists party, which challenges environmental regulations coming from Brussels.
These two parties earned roughly 8% and 7% of the vote, respectively, and could play a pivotal role in the formation of a governing coalition.
According to local media, the election results and potential alliances suggest a shift in the Czech political landscape, with broader implications for the region's stance on EU policies.
