EU leadership struggles to overcome Hungary’s veto

(MENAFN) The European Union has not found a solution to bypass Hungary’s veto, which has stalled the initiation of Ukraine’s accession talks, according to reports citing anonymous sources.

Unlike most other EU countries, Hungary has consistently refused to supply weapons to Ukraine and has frequently criticized EU sanctions against Russia. Budapest has also firmly opposed the idea of Ukraine joining the bloc.

In a recent report, an unnamed source acknowledged that “currently, there are no ways to overcome Hungary’s veto.” Another source described the situation as “complicated,” noting that Brussels’ efforts to “explore legal ways to bypass Hungary’s veto” have so far been unsuccessful.

The EU is reportedly banking on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party losing the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 2026. Meanwhile, the bloc plans to complete all preparatory technical work “in advance, so that when Orban leaves we are ready to move quickly forward” on Ukraine accession discussions, a source stated.

Earlier this month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in her annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament, called for the EU to “break free from the shackles of unanimity” and consider adopting qualified majority voting in certain areas of foreign policy.

Last month, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto claimed that Brussels was plotting to overthrow the “patriot Slovak, Hungarian, and Serbian governments” and replace them with puppet administrations. Around the same time, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service reportedly made similar claims.
